Once the visa has been issued, the student is given a Foreigner Identification Number (NIE), which will belong to him/her during his/her entire stay in Spain and will not change, even if the visa is extended or modified to another type of residence.
Now it remains to obtain a student card (TIE). If at the time of visa approval there are 6 months or less left until the end of the visa, it is not possible to obtain the card.
To apply and take prints for the card you will need:
Confirmation of pre-registration (cita previa)
Completed EX17 application form (it is here: Solicitud de TIE EX17)
Passport and photocopy of its main page + photocopy of the visa page
One colour photograph with a white background measuring 26 by 32 mm. Visa photo is not suitable
Proof of payment of state duty Model 790, Code 012. You can fill in and print the application form here: Tasa790_012. You can pay the fee in cash at any bank (16,08€)
Official letter of approval for the visa or page of passport with visa
Residence registration in Barcelona or its neighbourhood (provincia Barcelona)
To apply for a student card, you must make an appointment (Cita previa).
It can be done on the police website: CITA PREVIA
In the list of provinces, select Barcelona
Under Office, select Cualquier oficina
Select POLICIA - TOMA DE HUELLA (Expedición de tarjeta)
On the next page click on Entrar. Next, enter your details and click Aceptar
Select a suitable day and time and click Imprimir. We recommend to check it Monday morning or afternoon
Download and print the record
The processing time for the card is between 30 and 45 days. In some police stations, you will also need to make an appointment to collect the card
