“Even at 54!”: How Yulia Moved to Barcelona at 42 on a Language Student Visa & Started Over

Yulia, 44, Saint Petersburg → Barcelona. A candid story about leaving a 16-year career behind, moving to Spain on a student visa over 40, and finding a new home.

“Just Do It”

That is how Yulia answers when asked what she would tell her 41-year-old self knowing what she knows now:

No complex formulas. No conditions. Just do it.

Yulia arrived in Barcelona in January 2025 at the age of 42. Behind her were 16 years at a single company, a beloved job as a tour guide at the Zenit stadium, and a vibrant life in Saint Petersburg: exhibitions, concerts, constant work trips. A home, a beloved cat, and friends.

And a decision about moving to Europe that had been maturing for years.

Why Barcelona. And Why Through Language Studies

“This answer could fill a Dostoevsky novel. But in short — the desire to move was born long before 2022. But after 2022, I realized there was nothing left to wait or hope for. Nothing at all.”

Her dream of Barcelona began with a journalist’s blog and her book about relocating to the city. The main issue was money — it took a few years to solve the financial side.

When the moment came, the clearest and most legal route was a Spanish language student visa (Estancia por Estudios). It grants the legal right to live in the country, learn the language, and smoothly adapt to European life.

Student Visa Over 40: “I Was Told Rejection Rates Were High”

One of the biggest fears for those considering moving to Spain through education is age. Is it actually possible to get a student visa if you are 40+?

Spoiler: Yes. Spanish law sets no upper age limit. However, there are nuances that Yulia discovered during the final stage of document preparation:

“I was warned about the high visa rejection rate for applicants over 40. I was told that the motivation letter for the consulate plays a crucial role. You need to explain why Spain and why the Spanish language — but without emotional declarations of love for the country and without hints of wanting to stay permanently.”

Consulates understand that for many mature adults, a language visa is a stepping stone to immigration. Therefore, the motivation must be strictly professional.

What worked in Yulia’s case:

Her years of experience as a tour guide became her winning card. She provided official work documents and explained that she needed to master Spanish to conduct tours for Spanish-speaking tourists. It was logical, convincing, and clear to the Consulate.

Constant support: from initial visa roadmap questions to hands-on help with TIE paperwork upon arrival.

“Translating a 25-Page Bank Statement Was the Hard Part”

Yulia describes the visa application process as meticulous, but straightforward:

“Overall, the process isn’t difficult. The hard part was assembling the paperwork — translating a 25-page bank statement into Spanish, for instance. But the rest of the document checklist was manageable. Just scrupulous paperwork.”

Key Rules for the Student Visa (2025–2026):

  • Application: Initial applications must be submitted through the Spanish Consulate in your country of residence.

  • Course Intensity: The course must be at least 20 hours per week.

  • Finances: You must demonstrate funds in your account starting at roughly €600 per month of stay.

  • School Accreditation: Studies must take place at an officially accredited Spanish language school in Barcelona (such as Instituto Cervantes accredited centers).

Why Freeda Language Space

Yulia first wrote to Freeda back in October 2022 — two years before her actual move.

“Even back then, I received a detailed roadmap: how the visa process works, a list of main documents, and estimated costs and account balance requirements.

I loved their thorough, extremely detailed answers to all my questions. So in 2025, when I actively started preparing and was offered a choice of several language schools in Barcelona, I already knew I would choose Freeda.”

When Yulia arrived in Barcelona, the school guided her and other students through obtaining their foreigner identity card (TIE) — providing step-by-step instructions, links, and advice on municipal registration (Empadronamiento).

First Day at School: “What 44? Even at 54!”

Based on her placement test, Yulia was placed in a B1.2 group — even though she officially held an A2 certificate.

“I waited a few days for the group to finish their midterm exams. I came early to introduce myself, get my textbooks, and couldn’t wait to start. When you’re alone in a new country, the school, its schedule, and lessons are what keep you grounded and sane.”

As for being older than some younger classmates, she didn’t worry for a second:

“I left all age clichés back at the airport. I know my energy and drive can rival any 20-year-old. What age? What 44? I’d do it even at 54!”

When the Language Clicked: From Supermarkets to Dates

The immersion was total: Yulia arrived alone, and her life immediately switched to Spanish — paperwork, registration, apartment hunting, daily life.

“During my first month, I kept a detailed diary. I had a streak of 7 full days where I didn’t speak a word in my native language — only text messaging.”

And the turning point in overcoming the language barrier happened where she least expected it:

“When I went on dates from a dating app. I suddenly realized I could freely converse on any topic. And even joke in Spanish!”

Life in Barcelona Six Months Later

Today, Yulia is actively looking for projects — drawing on her rich background in design, marketing, and tourism. In her spare time, she weaves bead jewelry and regularly receives compliments from strangers on the streets of Barcelona.

“People constantly ask me for directions in the street now. The fear of not being able to say or understand something is completely gone.”

When talking about Freeda, her words are warm and genuine:

“Today, it’s my home, my refuge, and my anchor.”

What to Say to Anyone Thinking “It’s Too Late”?

“There is no such word as ‘too late’ for anything. It’s never too late for anyone. If you want to learn how to sail a yacht after 50 — just go for it!”
